NASA shuts down Voyager 1 instrument to conserve power

NASA turned off Voyager 1's Low-Energy Charged Particles instrument on April 17 to conserve power on the aging spacecraft.

The step keeps Voyager 1 operating in interstellar space even as its power budget continues to shrink.

Mission teams had planned the shutdown order in advance so the probe can keep returning its remaining science for as long as possible.
